Estimate the FBR duties and taxes to register an imported smartphone on PTA DIRBS, on passport or CNIC, with the full breakdown by value band. Rates are FY2026-27, in force from 1 July 2026, verified 1 November 2026.
| Customs value | Rs 166,200 |
| Customs duty | Rs 250 |
| Regulatory duty | Rs 17,600 |
| Sales tax (25% on duty-paid value Rs 184,050) | Rs 46,013 |
| Income tax (filer) | Rs 11,500 |
| Mobile handset levy | Rs 8,000 |
| Total | Rs 83,363 |
| Passport (within 60 days) | Rs 71,863 |
| CNIC, filer | Rs 83,363 |
| CNIC, non-filer | Rs 94,863 |
The passport route saves Rs 11,500 over CNIC filer on this phone, because no income tax is charged on a phone brought in as personal baggage.
| Customs value | Regulatory duty | Sales tax | Levy | Income tax (CNIC filer) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to US$30 | Rs 240 | 18% | Rs 100 | Rs 100 |
| US$31 to US$100 | Rs 2,400 | 18% | Rs 200 | Rs 100 |
| US$101 to US$200 | Rs 6,000 | 18% | Rs 200 | Rs 100 |
| US$201 to US$350 | Rs 8,800 | 18% | Rs 1,800 | Rs 970 |
| US$351 to US$500 | Rs 12,000 | 18% | Rs 4,000 | Rs 5,000 |
| US$501 to US$700 | Rs 17,600 | 25% | Rs 8,000 | Rs 11,500 |
| Above US$700 | Rs 17,600 | 25% | Rs 16,000 | Rs 11,500 |
Customs duty is Rs 250 per set in every band. Non-filer income tax is double the filer figure. Bands are upper-inclusive: exactly US$500 stays in the 18% band, and US$500.01 moves to the 25% band.
PTA tax is the name everyone uses for the FBR duties and taxes charged when an imported phone is registered on PTA's DIRBS system. Without registration, an imported phone stops working on Pakistani SIMs after the 60-day window. The tax itself is five charges added together: customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax, advance income tax, and the mobile handset levy. PTA runs the DIRBS system that decides whether a handset works on local networks, but FBR sets the rates and collects the money.
These examples use the calculator above at an exchange rate of Rs 277 per dollar. Change the rate in the calculator and every figure updates.
| Phone value | Passport | CNIC filer | CNIC non-filer |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$100 (budget phone) | Rs 8,313 | Rs 8,413 | Rs 8,513 |
| US$350 (mid-range phone) | Rs 29,930 | Rs 30,900 | Rs 31,870 |
| US$600 (upper mid-range phone) | Rs 71,863 | Rs 83,363 | Rs 94,863 |
| US$800 (flagship above US$700) | Rs 93,713 | Rs 105,213 | Rs 116,713 |
Notice the jump at the top: a phone just above US$500 pays 25% sales tax instead of 18%, and above US$700 the handset levy doubles from Rs 8,000 to Rs 16,000.
PTA tax is the everyday name for the FBR duties and taxes you pay to register an imported mobile phone on PTA's DIRBS system so it works on Pakistani networks. It is a bundle of five charges: customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax, advance income tax, and the mobile handset levy. PTA runs the DIRBS system, but FBR sets and collects the money.
FBR puts your phone into a value band based on its assessed customs value in US dollars. Each band carries fixed rupee amounts for regulatory duty, the handset levy, and income tax, plus sales tax of 18% up to US$500 or 25% above US$500. Sales tax is applied to the duty-paid value, which is the customs value plus customs duty plus regulatory duty. This calculator shows every line so you can see exactly how the total is built.
Yes, by the income tax amount. A phone brought in as personal baggage and registered on a passport within 60 days of arrival is exempt from advance income tax, so the passport total is lower. For example, a phone valued at US$600 costs about Rs 71,863 on passport versus Rs 83,363 on CNIC as a filer at Rs 277 per dollar. After 60 days you must use CNIC, and a 10% late fine applies.
Dial *#06# to get your 15-digit IMEI, then send it by SMS to 8484, dial *8484#, or enter it on the DIRBS portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk. The result is compliant, non-compliant, or blocked. For the exact tax figure, register the device and the system issues a Payment Slip ID (PSID) with the final amount. This calculator gives an estimate for planning; the PSID is the figure that counts.
Register your device on the DIRBS portal or by dialing *8484#, choose passport or CNIC registration, and the system generates a PSID with the exact amount. Pay the PSID through internet or mobile banking, an ATM, or a bank branch. Payment usually reflects within 24 to 48 hours, after which you can re-check your IMEI on 8484 to confirm the phone is compliant.
An imported phone that is not registered within 60 days of connecting to a Pakistani network gets its IMEI blocked on local SIMs, so calls, SMS, and mobile data stop working on every Pakistani carrier, while WiFi keeps working. Late registration also adds a 10% fine on the duty and taxes. Register inside the window to avoid both.
Only on the CNIC route. If you are not on the Active Taxpayers List, the advance income tax component doubles: for example from Rs 11,500 to Rs 23,000 on a phone above US$500. On the passport route there is no income tax at all, so filer status makes no difference there.
FBR fixes a US dollar value per brand and model in a Customs Valuation Ruling. That assessed value, not the shop price you paid, decides the tax band. For newer models without a published ruling, this calculator's value input is your estimate, so use the phone's international launch price in US dollars as a starting point and treat the result as an estimate.
Mostly because many calculators still use the old 2025-26 tables, including a 17% sales tax that no longer exists, and some apply sales tax to the bare customs value instead of the duty-paid value. Figures also move with the exchange rate and with the value FBR assigns to your exact model. This page uses the FY2026-27 rates in force from 1 July 2026, under SRO 1064(I)/2026 and the Finance Act 2026, and shows the sales tax base openly so you can see how each figure is reached.
Total tax is customs duty plus regulatory duty plus sales tax plus income tax (CNIC only) plus the handset levy, plus a 10% fine if registration is late. Sales tax is applied to the duty-paid value (customs value plus customs duty plus regulatory duty), per the import sales tax base. Only sales tax is a percentage; every other charge is a fixed amount that jumps at each value threshold, which is why a phone just over a band boundary can cost sharply more to register than one just under it.
This is an estimate for planning only. FBR fixes a USD value per brand and model, customs may add landing charges, and your exact figure is the one on your DIRBS Payment Slip ID. Check it at dirbs.pta.gov.pk or by sending your IMEI by SMS to 8484 before paying. Rates verified 1 November 2026.
